Editor’s Award for Dr. Lukas Sebeke
Dr. Lukas Sebeke, research associate in the Experimental Imaging and Image Guided Therapy group of Prof. Dr. Holger Grüll at the Institute of Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology at the University Hospital Cologne and the Faculty of Medicine, has received the Editor's Award of the International Journal of Hyperthermia in the category Physics/Engineering. This award recognizes his research paper, "Visualization of thermal washout due to spatiotemporally heterogeneous perfusion in the application of a model-based control algorithm for MR-HIFU mediated hyperthermia." The paper investigated a model-based algorithm developed by Dr. Sebeke for controlled heating of tumors using high-intensity focused ultrasound under MRI imaging and temperature control. This represents a step toward clinical application of ultrasound-hyperthermia based support of radio- and chemotherapy. The work demonstrated that control algorithms of this type allow markedly uniform and stable temperature control in human-like organisms by balancing the cooling effect of spatially and temporally variable blood flow at the level of individual blood vessels. In the future, this could be particularly important for the local release of cytostatic drugs from temperature-sensitive drug carriers circulating in the bloodstream.
